I Can’t Fail Him, But I Worry I Might

Nebulizer? Medicine? What? What does this kid need? Even if he could speak, I might not know.

It filled me with pride. I like to think that he shared in that feeling too. He earned it.

When it comes to agreeable attire, they don’t get much cooler than my non-verbal son.

People assume we are born this way. Our Dadness starts on day one.

As I write it out though, it becomes more obvious that this isn’t an Autism story.

My biggest fear was how I could protect my non-verbal son without being by his side constantly.

Maybe one day, he’ll tell us what is holding him back from using his voice. Maybe he won’t.

It’s my edible nemesis and my new daily nightmare. Welcome to fatherhood, pops.

It won’t happen overnight for him. It didn’t for me either.
