This story begins with me holding a grown-up’s hand.
Words only have power if you let them. When they were pointed at me, I let them.
Broken machines don’t give prizes. Broken people don’t give love.
This is not a metaphor. It really happened.
It can be anything that breaks our spirit, rocks our worlds, or rattles our foundations.
We never smelled the roses because we were thinking of all the seeds left to plant.
The saving grace, I told myself, was that she hadn’t seen me.
