My Special Needs Son, My Illogical Guilt

The responsibility I feel has more to do with me than it does with him.

An insatiable appetite, nonverbal autism, and surprising cat-like agility,

He wasn’t doing it for us. He was doing it for himself.

Simply put, he’s mine and I’ll watch over him forever.

Time has made many interactions I once would have thought impossible possible

Don’t let anyone heap guilt on you for the sake of their own ego.

You don’t need to have someone playing social volleyball with you to have them in your life

The hour would end, the door would close, and we would all be alone together again.

My parenthood is neither painful nor does it require relief. When I say that I accept my son as he is, I’m not trying to fool myself and others.

I had done nothing wrong, but at the time, their confused glances sure made me feel that way.
